Litho vs Screen Printing

A very big part of the work we do on the custom packaging we manufacture at Magra Packaging are the designs and branding we print on them. Most of the printing is done as either screen printing or litho printing. Both of these printing methods have their benefits and uses in different printing applications.

Litho printing works on the basis that water and oil do not mix. A printing plate is created so that when ink is applied to the wet non-image area it is repelled. It is then transferred onto a rubber blanket and then onto the surface that you want your image printed on.

Benefits of litho printing:

  • Very cost-effective way of printing
  • High speed printing
  • Extremely good image quality

When performing screen printing a very fine mesh is used. This mesh is burnt in the places you don’t want to print thus creating a stencil. Ink is then slowly pressed through the mesh onto the surface you want to print on, a simple method of printing on packaging and various other surfaces.

Benefits of screen printing:

  • The inks last a lot longer than most printing methods
  • Can be used on a very wide variety of surfaces
  • Can produce very vibrant colours most other printing methods can’t

Screen printing is a bit slower than litho and doesn’t quite provide the same quality which is why it is often the more affordable of the two. Screen printing is also a lot more versatile and can be done on any surface that can be flattened.

The choice of which to use is ultimately yours, but each application may require a different printing method based on your quality requirements, the surface you are printing on and affordability. How is foil printing done?

Foil printing, or otherwise known as foil screenprinting is a two-part process used to give packaging, and other printed work that extra sparkle with either a silver or gold foil layer on certain parts of the packaging or print design. Magra Packaging uses foil printing for various packaging jobs, from sweets and treats boxes to cosmetics packaging, as and when required by the customer.

The process involves first applying an adhesive ink layer to the item that you are printing on, this is then cured and dried through the conveyor dryer. Once dry, the foil sheet is heat-pressed onto the item and sticks only to the adhesive portions of the material, leaving the required sections with the required metallic finish to give it that extra sparkle on the shelves. Before the being finalised, the item is taken through the conveyor dryer one last time to ensure that the elements have bonded together properly.

At Magra, we pride ourselves in the quality of our workmanship and our foil printing is done with precision and skill by qualified individuals who aim to provide every customer with a product of the highest satisfaction. To find out more about the foil printing or to request  a quote, please call Magra on 021 448 1399.
